Kreacher isn't allowed to touch master Severus' things. He can't wash his dark robes or cook the special, easy to swallow meals he's been eating since the near fatal snakebite that damaged his throat.
Master Severus' already tidy office is out of bounds for old Kreacher, along with the man's personal laboratory, the herb garden and the recently upgraded library that has replaced old Mistress Walburga's Dark Arts collection.
Although Kreacher himself has been forbidden to look after them Master Severus' possessions are unfailingly tended to with the most bewildering devotion. His serviceable boots are hand-polished every Friday. His outer robes get brushed weekly to a velvety shine and even the offensively cheap quills he often uses until the stubs are too smooth to produce the sharp lines of his elegant script are dutifully sharpened not by the house-elf born to serve the Noble House of Black, but by the Black heir himself.
Despite how long they've been together Harry Potter often struggles to remember that his forbidding husband chose to belong to him when he'd agreed to their bonding. Master Severus is always so formal, so reluctant to both offer and accept public shows of affection that poor Master Harry is left seeking further intimacy in performing all these little, menial tasks for his benefit.
Kreacher watches his young master so busily polishing, cooking and cleaning after his bonded and often wonders how is it possible to love someone so fiercely. To have such need for contact that hand-holding isn't enough and neither is lovemaking. It must be exhausting to feel such hunger, such want, such desperate possessiveness towards someone so damaged that he can't even bring himself to say the words 'I love you'.
“But he does, master. He does. He loves you every time he swallows your terrible food without telling you it's unsalted. He loves you when he wears the wrong shoes just because you've polished them and uses the sharpened quill he'd been thinking of discarding because his long fingers can't hold it anymore. He loves you just like you love him, and it's wonderful and humbling and... strange... to see such pure devotion thrive inside number 12's love-starved walls.”

But then you show that there is indeed very much love on Severus' part. It is just as hidden and unobtrusive as Sev himself is. (But obvious enough for old Kreacher, who is probably as starved for love and affection as the House of Black and its inhabitants).
As always, many thanks for sharing your story. ^^

Date: 2014-09-29 08:57 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you enjoyed the twist there, at the end. You are right in your assessment that the first part of this drabble showed Harry's affection to be heartbreakingly one-sided, but I wanted them both equally invested, so I had to show Sev's emotions too. His actions are both covert and eloquent, and I wonder if Harry is really that blind to them or if he finds his own sort of comfort in knowing that his efforts are appreciated, even if Severus does it so silently. :D
Thanks, as usual, for taking the time to both read and review another work of mine. Your beautiful and thoughtful comment meant the world to me, teryarel. :D

, but the last paragraph made it all better. Thanks for that.
It was a pleasure to feel Kreacher's devotion to both his masters through his observations and encouragement towards Harry. I am really a big fan of Kreacher (after locket incident Kreacher)and I am so glad you showed him the way you did in this drabble.
It is fitting that a house elf will understand what all these chores speak about one's love and devotion towards the receiver. In the end I think all three of them will learn to speak the same language of love. It is a bit sad, that with his love deprived history still Kreacher is the one who managed it with (seemingly )the least difficulty. But hopefully Harry will be able to learn it as well.
Er, sorry for rambling.
Have a beautiful day!:)

Date: 2014-10-06 06:54 pm (UTC)I see we both share a love for post-locket Kreacher and I definitely agree with your point that, if anyone out there was ever going to understand the idea of expressing devotion through these sort of chores, it would definitely be a house elf. I'm not sure if the three of them will ever learn to speak about love in the same language the others are using, since they are all so intrinsically different from one another, but I hope that, even if they never manage to voice the words properly, there is enough commitment, enough patience and understanding on all sides to recognize everyone's efforts. Lack of love often leaves a mark in those it touches, but it also makes them specially able to read between the lines and that, I think, will help these three more than anything. :D
Anyway... Thanks so much for taking the time to both read and review another work of mine, agnes. Your beautiful and generous comment meant the world to me.

Date: 2014-10-10 06:39 am (UTC)The love that is described through the eyes of such an old elf like Kreacher himself is so unique, subtle and unobtrusive, yet passionate and burning at the same time. Reading everything till the end as everything finally pieces together, my heart aches for them both.
On one hand Harry is insecure about Severus' love for him that he tries his best to cater to his beloved's every possible need, every little tasks that he thinks Severus will appreciate, all done by hand. And I have to agree with Kreacher in asking: Because, evidently, it's not everyday you can find someone who is willing to do anything freely for you (aside from family, but there are a few exceptions in this case as well), and to have it being demonstrated here with Harry doing all that he can think of to assist Severus, integrating himself as much as he can into his lover's every day life... it's beautiful and utterly heart-wrenching.
This line is the total sum of Harry's emotions, all that he desires out of doing what he does for this relationship. Because, in the end, 'contact' and 'lovemaking' is all but physical. And Harry yearns for that internal connection, that confirmation which tells him this isn't some sort of a vain, unrequited love. It is just sad to see the clear desperation in Harry's actions as I cannot help but feel like Harry is trying to convince himself that Severus needs him in his life by doing all of this. As Kreacher says, and this is so Harry that it's just... sad. He does a tendency to forget that people choose to be with him, not because they are forced to or feel a sense of obligation towards him.
And then all the way to the end, you drop a bombshell on me. Knowing you and your Severus, there must undoubtedly be a rebound of sort somewhere, and I miserably fail to brace myself for impact even though it was absolutely within expectation! Because this Severus we are talking about, your Severus no less, the one that is for crying out loud. Your Severus, the Severus that is so immensely tragic most of the time that it's heart-wrenching. That one line right there wraps up the entirety of what Severus is (supposedly) like in a relationship with another.
In two sentences, you turn everything around, and, honestly, it feels like something almost akin to magic- the way how you execute all of this in 365 words. In one moment of overwhelming weakness and insecurity, Harry voices the ever dreadful question that looms constantly at the forefront of his mind, and Kreacher answers him in such a simple way that it makes everything seem crystal clear and plain as day.
Actions speak louder than words, and isn't just Severus to return Harry's affection in the most discreet and secretive of way? Aside from being unable to bring himself to say the necessary reassurances, he is trying his best to show his love for Harry with just as much effort as Harry exerts.
It has always been there right under Harry's nose, or right before his eyes, the whole time. However, because Harry has a tendency to forget, he will sometimes need a reminder. And who else better to assume this task but Kreacher? The old, observant little elf that has been stripped of all his duties but for the most important one. It makes it all the more wonderful that this all has been told from Kreacher's point of view with such tentativeness and tender that it feels as if the warmth of their love, like burning flames from a cozy fireplace- illuminating, captivating and long-lasting (as long as there are logs to feed the fire, and I would like to think that between Severus and Harry, they'll manage to produce enough dry wood for a life time and beyond), was seeping in every corner of this cold and lifeless place, bringing it back to life like it is doing with Kreacher's old heart.
Such a remarkable work you have here, truly remarkable. If you have the patience to read everything till now, I thank you for your patience. You are an amazing writer. This relationship between Severus and Harry that you often portray in other works as well if what keeps me crawling back for more (new entries or old entries, anything really)... Now I just feel downright creepy. Sorry to have put you through all of that rant and ramble!

Date: 2014-10-10 04:46 pm (UTC)Once again let me tell you that there is no need for you to ask me to excuse your need to 'rant' about this drabble. I love being ranted at and I rant myself in return to other authors' work, so... long comments are OK. More than Ok. They are very welcome. ;D
I'm thrilled that this drabble managed to touch you so deeply and I must say that your assessment of the emotions that each and every one of the three characters that were interacting here was absolutely spot on.
Harry's insecurity is indeed heartbreaking, but I think he's grown up going from the detachment and lack of love of his maternal family to the overly expressive, touchy-feely way in which the Weasley family expresses affection and he's struggling to accept the idea that there is a third option to express love: Severus' option. It is possible to love someone without constantly touching them, or hugging them or writing poems to their beauty. It is possible to love somebody quietly and still experience that same depth of emotion, but of course, Harry has never seen that before, and so he can't quite wrap his head around the concept.
Severus, on the other hand, has learned to 'mask' his affections, so to speak. He loves very deeply indeed, but he's wary and afraid and way too subtle for Harry. He needs to learn to open up and attempt to give his husband the outspoken reassurances that he needs, but getting there will take him some time.
Kreacher can see all of it, he sees it and he marvels at both his masters' blindness when it comes to each others' needs, but he doesn't once doubt that they love each other and I'm pretty certain that the boys themselves don't doubt it, either, when it comes down right to it. You are right, after all, actions do speak better than words and Harry must be able to see Severus' acceptance of his care for him just as well as Severus can see through Harry's need to do all these chores for him. :D
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this work so much, and yes, I did have the patience to read the entirety of your gorgeously eloquent, generous and encouraging comment. Thanks so much for having had the patience of sitting down to write it, since receiving made my day a whole lot brighter. ;D
Thanks so much for all your rambles and I hope it won't take long before you delight me with some more. :)
Take care for now
